I hate Norton and don't want to pay actual money for it. It's always popping up boxes all the time and annoying me, and it will start running scans or threatening to shut down my machine when I don't want it to. I want something quiet that’ll run in the background and will only pop up if I've got an actual virus threat. I used to have McAfee on my old personal and loved it. Suggestions?
Answer:
There are a few choices when it comes to security, mainly in the AntiVirus department. Some very good, free anti-viruses available to download are:
1) AVG 8 AntiVirus. Easiest interface to use, very fast scanning and doesn't lag your computer at all. Only has a 78% detection rate, but catches the most harmful of viruses. If you're a normal home user, you're not in too much danger of higher level viruses and this is the AV for you:

2) Avast! 4 AntiVirus. Smaller, sleeker skin, average scanning speed, but reports a lot of safe files as viruses, so you might need to watch out for that. 78% detection rate, but a lot more complicated than most other free AVs. Use this if you’re handy with a personal and you know what needs to be scanned:

3) Avira AntiVirus. Simple layout, which even the most basic of users can navigate. Incredibly fast scanning, with a 90% detection rate. Not as simple on the eyes as other AVs, and you need to know what you're doing to get the more advanced features, but it is definite a candidate:

Personally I use AVG, but only because I go for looks. If you’re paranoid about viruses then the only real option is Avira. But if you just want normal protection, then any of the three will do it for you.
And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:

Also, for protecting your personal info and files, use Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition:
http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_fr…
All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like McAfee and Norton (which only has a 6% detection rate!), and don't use up as many resources.
Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.
Hope that helps.
Answer:
ESET NOD32 Antivirus or ESET Smart Security (Internet Security, include firewall)
Why must select NOD32 Antivirus?
Best Detection:
ESET is the leader in proactive, precise threat protection with more Advanced awards for better threat detection than any other vendor since May 2005. (source AV-Comparatives.org)
Threat Sense™ technology detects more than 75% of new, unknown, threats heuristically - even before a signature update is available (Source AV-Test.org)
ESET Threat Sense is the only antivirus technology that has not missed a single In-the-Wild virus in rigorous Virus Bulletin VB100 testing since Might 1998. (Source virusbtn.com)
Low False Positive Rate:
A very low false positive rate ensures that the “good” files on your personal will not be flagged as malware. This is due to the intelligent synergistic use of advanced heuristics and generic signatures. ESET Threat Sense has produced the fewest false positives in its long history of testing with Virus Bulletin.
Fastest Performance:
42 MB/sec average scanning rate on Windows XP SP2 (source: Virus Bulletin).
Up to 34 times faster than the leading brands under Windows XP
Minimal Resource Utilization:
Optimized engine uses approximately 38 MB memory on average.
Uses less than 40M of disk space.

Switch to road runner and the service is free, I got a malware virus recently and I e-mailed them and they had a tech agent to get in touch with me and together we got something off of mine I was vexed with for over a week and it was driving me up a wall, their service is called CA[computer associates] and since then, I notice a little screen of theirs
pops up and states they downloaded a security check on my personal. I was so aggravated with that virus, I was going to get rid of my computer, but now all is well, beware of messages that are in your bottom tray that says your download is ready, that’s how they begin most of the time, just ignore them, even if you try to right click them and delete them, they will be in your computer files in an instant. Good luck.

I dont think anyone is offering free AV anymore after AVG started charging for it (I think they let you try it free for 30 days than you’ve to pay around $40 USD to keep using it). I have been using only one Computer on my network to scan the others over the network so that I only have to pay for one subscription but I was thinking about trying to see if I have the ability to get a free Linux AV to do the same thing since my media Personal computer is running Fedora 9. Another way to avoid having to pay for anti-virus is to just make sure that you never go to any websites that you don't trust and never download anything that you aren't sure of or install anything that you aren't sure about. I have been doing that on my laptop for years just being extra cautious with it.
