I heard it was possible by doing something after booting up in safe mode.

The safe mode will not allow this because it does not permit any system changes. But the removal of problem can be done manually. This is the method I use to remove antivirus 2008 XP from systems. Do not mess around it the registery without a ghost copy of the source drive.
