Have Spysweeper and Norton but have had major issues get by both programs. Your opinion based on experience would be helpful. Paying for it isn’t a problem as long as it's good.

Norton and such are often bloated programs that use up as much memory and slow your personal down as much as spyware might. And you have to pay for it. But at least it keeps them out, I guess.
Using a combination of Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware will pretty much keep your PC absolutely clean, and what's more, they're free and easy to use.
Also, be careful of rogue spyware programs that mask themselves as anti viruses, as that’s the trend nowadays..

I respectfully disagree with regards to using Free antispyware products such as Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. There’s a major difference in the method in which most free antispyware products detect and clean your computer vs. how most major antispyware products do.
Most free products simply scan your computer for known locations where spyware may install itself and then relies on historical observation of those locations to detect infections. There are two major problems with this - first, you get a lot of false positives because the program might see a change made by a legitimate program as spyware and also the level of detection and removal is mediocre at best.
You are much superior spending $30 or so on software that scans your computer against a spyware database which contains specific spyware definitions for each spyware application out there. Usually this type of spyware software also grants regular free updates so you are always scanning your personal against a database of the most current and up to date spyware threats which means the software is much more effective in detection and removal.
Vendors that offer free software simply don't put any money into the proper resources required to setup and maintain a spyware database, hence the difference in the detection methods.
Personally, I use Spyware Doctor. In several lab tests, it has always outperformed everything we have put it up against and it has won numerous awards from reputable sources such as CNET and Computer Magazine. Plus, they offer a combination antispyware/antivirus software for a discount.
